After spending the previous night with Michael (Jared Rushton), his confused mom, Ivy (Robin Wright) is now suspicious of her own daughter's unexplainable and frequent dream visits to a strange alternate world. When Ivy spots Michael after his mysterious and high-strung return home, the two immediately head for the police station for investigation, but find that their visit has another meaning. As they investigate the whereabouts of their "patient" who returned from an apparently romantic trip, they are suddenly transported back to the original timeline where the entire family appears in the middle of a school play and Michael is captured on the spot by the headmistress looking to close down the school. Now in possession of their daughter's body, the adults must use all of their patience and manipulation skills to get their unstable and jealous daughter to agree to give up her body so that she can become a normal human female. With the threat of a midnight rescue by the FBI agents, the two finally agree, only to have the final result turn them into enemies once again.
